EXCERPT: Within the cocoon that is Davos, the problems of the world suddenly seem less intractable. What could possibly be beyond the wisdom, power and contacts of the great and the good assembled in the concrete bunker where the sessions are held, or at the private dinners and parties in the Belvedere and other swish hotels where the power talk and fine wines flow in equal measure? The World Economic Forum's (WEF) annual meeting, being held Jan. 28 to Feb. 1 in the rarefied air of the Swiss Alpine ski resort that gives the meeting its nickname, will bring together, as always, the glitterati consisting of politicians, policymakers, business moguls and academics, to schmooze, party, pontificate and generally put the world to rights. This year more than 40 heads of state or government will be among the 2,500 participants, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and China's Premier Wen Jiabo among the star turns. (The WEF has been steadily expanding in activity and standing in the leading developing economies.) Plus, a record 1,400 chief executives and chairmen and women from leading companies, 215 leaders from academic institutions and think tanks, 60 government ministers, 50 heads or representatives of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), 30 heads or senior officials of international organizations, 10 ambassadors, 10 religious leaders of different faiths and 10 trade union leaders. Probably a partridge in a pear tree too. Certainly 225 media leaders (including representatives from Forbes). Davos has held its pace among the first division of such events since it was founded in 1971 by Klaus M. Schwab, the Swiss business professor who is still its presiding father. Though it started as a management symposium, Davos had hit its stride as an economic, political and social policy forum by 1974.
